Hero Content Strategy 101

Hello, World!

If you’ve read, watched, or listened to our content before, you’ll already know that here at RED we’re big advocates for content marketing and even bigger fans of marketing strategies.

But it’s no secret that creating killer content can take a lot of resources, time, and planning to develop, so - how do you make sure your hard work pays off?

If you’re thinking about taking the next step in your marketing and creating bigger pieces of content, you're in the right place

In this blog we’re sharing how you can get the ball rolling and make the most of your content.

What is Hero Content?

Meet your new marketing best friend.

Hero content pieces are large SEO-orientated pieces of content that are high in value and act as the centre of a marketing strategy, think E-books, webinars, or blogs. They’re designed to spread brand awareness and increase engagement.

They’re the gift that keeps on giving, as they can boost the authority of your business positioning you as an expert, act as a lead magnet to attract potential customers, and can also do wonders for your SEO (search engine optimisation).

Interested in finding out more about the benefits of a hero content strategy before you dive in?

Check out this YouTube video from our Director, Bethan Wright, for an overview of how implementing hero content into your marketing could help you to scale up your business.

How can I use it in my marketing?

Whether your goal is to increase brand awareness or scale your customer base, the big benefit of adding hero content into your marketing strategy is that it’ll provide you with the opportunity to multiple new touchpoints for you to interact with potential customers.

Content is seriously important in order to succeed in online marketing and if you don’t create good content, you won’t be able to cut through the abundance of material available online and maintain a long-term successful business.

Hero content also comes with the added benefit of being able to repurpose content into smaller bite-sized chunks within your marketing strategy, providing you with a reference point to create shorter-form content that’s consistent, engaging, and aligns with your marketing goals.

What can your hero content become?

Now that you know what hero content marketing is all about, let’s look at an example of how a hero piece can be used.

For this example, we’ll look at how a YouTube video could be repurposed to create multiple touchpoints in your marketing strategy.

As you’ll see below, one YouTube video can be broken down into multiple types of alternative content, such as:

  • Podcast Episodes

  • Blogs

  • Social media video posts

Podcast Episodes

Podcasts have boomed in recent years, so converting the video into a podcast episode by extracting the audio from the video is a time-savvy way to maximize your audience and reach people that would rather listen than watch or read.

Top tip: If the video contains an outro or intro that’s specific to YouTube, use a tool like Descript to edit it, or record a brand-new one.

Blog

Converting YouTube videos into blog posts is a great way to keep your website fresh, and can provide a great place to collect emails for email marketing, alongside providing you with social media content that drives traffic to your website.

Another reason you need to consider converting your video content into blog posts is because of the SEO benefit: adding blogs to your website will give your business more visibility in search engines.

Top tip: cross-promote your YouTube content by embedding it at the top of your blog. It will give your videos a boost on Google and will also bring more subscribers over from your blog to your channel.

Social Media Content

Social media is usually one of the first touchpoints that potential customers will engage with, so repurposing YouTube videos into social media content is a great way to boost brand awareness, build trust, and engage with potential customers where they hang out.

There are multiple ways that you can repurpose YouTube videos into micro-content for social media. Some of our favourite ways to do this are:

  •  Creating 3-4 shorter video clips and sharing them as reels or feed posts

  • Written quote graphics

  • Audiograms

  • Carousel posts

Hero content is perfect for repurposing on socials, as you really can make so much content. The hero content and additional content pieces you create can each be made into 3/4 posts. You heard that right - a week’s worth of content each.

So, what now?

At this point, you should have a good understanding of what hero content is and how it can benefit your marketing.

Not for you?
